The Ohio Feminist Art Museum: Join the Movement
In January 2024, MK Wright and Tamala Murk founded the Ohio Feminist Art Museum (OFAM) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a powerful mission: to collect, preserve, promote, and display feminist art and culture for all. We imagined more than just a museum—we envisioned a welcoming space where like-minded people can gather, connect, and celebrate feminist creativity and activism.
We’re committed to inclusivity and community-building throughout Ohio. That’s why we didn’t only establish a physical home for OFAM but also are planning to host events across the state to uplift and amplify feminist voices wherever they are.
OFAM’s founding Board of Trustees includes MK Wright, Sheryl Lazenby, Lori Eberhard, and Hazel Varanese. With early support from the Ohio Arts Council and Greater Columbus Arts Council, we launched our first website, hosted multiple events, and began spreading the word. These grants gave us the momentum to grow—our community has expanded from just five founders and three Sponsors to more than 200 supporters in the first year. The enthusiasm and encouragement we’ve received have been truly inspiring.
At OFAM, feminism means advocating for political, economic, personal, and social equality. We shine a light on the herstories of women trailblazers and changemakers throughout Ohio and define feminist art as work that explores femininity, empowerment, equality, spirituality, sexuality, and social justice.
In 2025, we laid a solid foundation for OFAM’s future with real accomplishments. We applied for and were granted a 5 year Sustainability grant through the Ohio Arts Council, which gave us confidence to enter into a long-term lease for the first physical location for OFAM. We built collaborative relationships with feminist galleries, organizations, and businesses, and worked with a professional team to revamp our website to better serve our mission. We also worked with a legal team to finalize our Policies and Procedures—the essential tools for shaping the first feminist art museum of its kind, as well as created legal contracts for the donation of art and cultural artifacts by donors and artists. The cost for this was covered by one of our Founding Sponsors.
With OAC’s support and the support of our Founding Sponsors, in March 2026 we will open the first physical space for the Ohio Feminist Art Museum. OFAM will be located in Westerville, Ohio and will be dedicated to our mission of celebrating and preserving feminist art and culture.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to begin to remodel our museum space, as well as to grow programs like our Online Feminist Art Exhibitions, Feminist Book Club, art and cultural events, social gatherings, fundraising initiatives, creating the Gaia Garden and advocacy work around equal pay and gender justice in the arts.
We are also excited about our newest member, Anastasia Sotnikova, a doctoral student in Arts Administration, Education, and Policy at The Ohio State University, where she focuses on Museum Education. With a background in marketing communications, she brings both strategic thinking and creativity to her work at the intersection of art, education and community engagement. She is especially interested in how art can bring people together – her research explores ways to foster dialogue among artists, institutions, and diverse communities while creating more inclusive and meaningful experiences. Drawing on queer, feminist, and participatory approaches, she works to expand access to the arts and deepen how audiences connect with them. She will be joining as a Program Coordinator during her internship over this next year.
